We’re thrilled to feature this coffee, which comes from the lush, volcanic soils of Kirinyaga County, one of Kenya's most renowned coffee-growing regions. Processed at the Thunguri Wet Mill, a key part of the Kibirigwi Farmers Cooperative since 1962, this coffee reflects the incredible dedication of nearly 7,000 smallholder farmers. Handpicked and carefully washed using fresh water from the Kangocho stream, the result is a beautifully balanced cup. Expect a black tea-like body, with rich notes of blackcurrant and apricot, finishing with a delicate amaretto cherry sweetness.
Single Origin Coffee Description
Our coffee hails from Kirinyaga County, a renowned coffee-producing region nestled in the central highlands of Kenya. The area is blessed with abundant rainfall, rich volcanic soils, diverse natural fauna, and numerous water sources, providing smallholders and cooperatives with the ideal conditions to grow and process some of Kenya's most vibrant, fruit-forward coffees.
Since its establishment in 1962, the Thunguri Wet Mill has processed between 400,000 to 700,000 kilograms of coffee cherries annually. The mill is part of the Kibirigwi Farmers Cooperative Society, which boasts nearly 7,000 members. Each of these smallholders cultivates coffee, amongst other produce, on an average of half an acre of land.
Coffee cherries are picked ripe by hand and delivered to the washing station for pulping the same day. After pulping, the beans are fermented for 16-18 hours then washed twice with fresh water from the Kangocho stream before being graded. Parchment is then dried on raised beds until reaching the ideal moisture content.
This coffee beautifully exemplifies what we love about Kenyan coffee, offering a well-balanced, black tea-like body with flavours of blackcurrant and apricot, finishing with a sweet amaretto cherry note.
